Admissions

For information other than application procedures, please see the respective program descriptions.

 

Application deadlines

Courses are conducted on a semestral basis. Application is made within the periods specified below, with entrance in the following semester:

  • Master's degree programs: August 1-31, each year
  • Doctoral degree programs: March 1-31 or August 1-31, each year

 

Exams

Interviews and exams are not required for international students applying through the PEC/PG Agreement. If not applying through such agreement, foreign applicants should undergo both interview and written tests.

 

Application materials

  2. 1 photo (3 x 4 cm), attached to the application form

  3. Copy of birth or marriage certificate

  4. Lattes résumé (CNPq), updated and printed

  5. Official transcripts from the undergraduate institution

  6. If English is not the applicant’s native language, he or she must show evidence of English proficiency at the admission exam. Satisfactory scores in other tests up to 5 years prior to the date of the application proficiency test are also accepted:

    Required scores:

    TOEFL IBT – 72 for Masters and 84 for Doctorate; 


    TOEFL PAPER – 402 for Masters and 469 for Doctorate; 
    TOEFL (Computer-based) – 180 for Masters and 210 for Doctorate; 
    IELTS – 5.4 for Masters and 6.3 for Doctorate; 
    TOEIC – 594 for Masters and 693 for Doctorate; 
    MICHIGAN – approval;
    CAMBRIDGE: A, B or C.

     

  7. Copy of the undergraduate degree diploma (front and back). Students whose diplomas have not yet been issued should submit an official document indicating the date of conclusion and degree earned. Students who are still atending undergraduate school should submit an official letter indicating that they are potentially eligible to graduate 

  8. Official transcripts from the graduate institution (Doctoral program applicants only)

  9. Master degree diploma (Doctoral program applicants only). Students whose diplomas have not yet been issued should present an official document indicating the date of conclusion and degree earned. Students who are still atending the graduate program should submit an official letter indicating that potential date of the dissertation exam. Graduate diplomas obtained in countries other than Brazil, applicants should additionally submit a recognition or equivalence of the diploma.

  10. Previous acceptance of an advisor of the program's faculty (acceptance form)

  11. Research Plan according to Fapesp standards

  12. Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for foreigners (CELPE-BRAS), intermediary or higher level. The deadline for submitting is 6 months following enrollment, if addmitted into the program.

Tuition and fees

The graduate studies provided by the University of São Paulo are non-tuitional. The application process, however, includes a R$150 (approx. sixty US Dollars) fee, which admitted international students can pay upon arrival.
