ESALQ celebrates a decade of agreements with French academic institutions

Agreements comprise students of Agriculture and Forestry, Environmental Management and Food Science

On April 14th, 2005, at President’s Office, an agreement was signed between Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (USP/ESALQ) and the Institut Nationale Agronomique Paris-Grignon, now integrated into the AgroParisTech group and the Fesia Consortium, at the time consisting of schools located in Angers, Beauvais, Lille, Lyon and Toulouse.

At the time, the document was signed by the president of USP, Adolpho José Melfi, by the dean of ESALQ, José Roberto Postali Parra, by professor Maria Lúcia Carneiro Vieira, from the Genetics Department of ESALQ, and by representatives of the French institutions, and made official the double degree program for undergraduate students in Agriculture. “These agreements are pioneers in the country, and they have been provided with the support of CAPES/MEC (study and internship) and the Direction Générale de l'Enseignement et de la Recherche (DGER), the Ministère de l'Agriculture, de l'Agroalimentaire et de la Forêt, the French suport”, said professor Maria Lucia.

The first double degree diplomas were granted to two students from ESALQ and two French students in January, 2008. In the next years, new agreements with other French institutions were signed, including SupAgro (Centre International d'Études Supérieures en Sciences Agronomiques - Montpellier SupAgro) and ONIRIS (L’Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire, Agroalimentaire et de l’Alimentation de Nantes-Atlantique), involving even other Brazilian universities.

Currently, the agreements comprise students of Agriculture and Forestry, Environmental Management and Food Science. The annual student mobility is significant, in both directions, either in internships, obtaining credits in courses or in double diploma programs.

Ten years since the introduction of the partnership, the number of students benefited from these agreements is over 200. “We have 57 Brazilians and 32 French double degree graduates in Agriculture and more recently one Brazilian and two French students in Food Science”, reminds Maria Lucia.

Nowadays, professors Maria Lucia Carneiro Vieira (LaSalle Beauvais), Silvia H. Galvão de Miranda (SupAgro - Montpellier and AgroParisTech), Thais M. Ferreira de Souza Vieira (ONIRIS and AgroSup ¬ Dijon) and Thiago Romanelli (Fesia Consortium) are coordinating student mobility projects in partnership with France.
