USP among the 100 best in the world

Beyond the area of Agriculture and Forestry, USP was among the 50 best in the world in other seven areas

The quality of academic and scientific production of the higher education institutions is evaluated constantly by international surveys, and are published in rankings of best universities considering area of expertise or geographic distribution. In October 2014, for example, about 50 foreign higher education institutions evaluated by ranking produced by the US News and World Report publisher, which ranks the world's best universities in Agricultural Sciences, indicated important result to the University of São Paulo (USP). In the survey, USP was appointed 5th place. According to the ranking, the activities considered in this area include horticulture, food science and nutrition, dairy products and agriculture, fields that have the contribution of Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (USP/ESALQ).

On April 29th, the skills developed at ESALQ were also evident in the QS World University by Subject ranking. In the area of Agriculture and Forestry, USP was appointed the 24th position in the survey prepared by Quacquarelli Symonds, British research organization in education, specialized in higher education institutions. The ranking evaluated 3,551 universities worldwide, in 36 areas.

According to the dean of ESALQ, professor Luiz Gustavo Nussio, "based on the evaluation of recent rankings, USP position, and especially ESALQ, suggests that we gained national and international visibility and this is a successful way. Our strategy is to emphasize this process and also seek indicators showing the transfer of knowledge to the productive sector with environmental sustainability. Thus, ESALQ will continue fulfilling its mission in training professionals with excellence, able to offer solutions to the needs of our society”.

The area of "Agriculture & Forestry", according to the guide courses prepared by the methodology of the QS Top Universities ranking, requires knowledge of natural sciences and social sciences, based on areas such as biology, environmental science, chemistry, economics, management and business. Thus, the emphases vary according to the institutions, some focusing on economies of natural resources, sustainability worldwide and global food systems, in a more international perspective, while others focus a specific country or region within a particular aspect of agriculture, as farming techniques, animal care, sustainable practices or property management.

To the president of ESALQ Research Commission, Carlos Eduardo Pelegrino Cerri, “it’s gratifying to know that decades of efforts in research, education and extension are continually being recognized by national and international rankings. This motivates us even more to continue with the excellence of activities developed at ESALQ”.

USP - Beyond the area of Agriculture and Forestry, USP was among the 50 best in the world in other seven areas: Art and Design (34th); Philosophy (37th); Architecture (33rd); Civil Engineering (47th); Dentistry (12th); Veterinary Science (36th); Pharmacy and Pharmacology (46th). The lists were divided into five major areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social and Management Sciences.
